Aardvark Book Club is a monthly book subscription box. They are relatively newer than some other companies and I only recently joined in the past few months but so far I am loving it!
Each month they curate a selection of five new release titles that you can pick from. You can choose up to three books each month, one from their monthly selections and two from any of their current or backlist books.
They’re pricing is very similar to other subscription boxes and definitely affordable. Shipping is always free. They ship to both the United States and Canada. See their FAQ page to learn more about how it works.
All books are hardcover and have cool color combinations that match the vibe of the book.
The hardcovers are also a unique soft texture, which I love because I can read it without the dust jacket and it feels nice in my hands. (Aesthetics are an important part of the process, am I right?)
Each box also comes with the cutest bookmark ever! Not only are they adorable little aardvarks, but they are functional too, as there is a notch in the side that perfectly holds the bookmark in place (and they make perfect bookstagram props).
They pick books in a variety of genres so there’s always something for everyone: contemporary, literary, historical, thriller, mystery, romance, horror, fantasy, and even science fiction!
One thing I’ve noticed about Aardvark specifically, in comparison to other book subscriptions, is their unique selections. They tend to be books that not a lot of people are really talking about, even if they are from popular authors. I love seeing new and underrated books that I may otherwise not have had on my radar.
They also have an app, with a community tab where you can chat with other members about the books!
They are super active on Instagram so go check them out over there if you’d like as well.
Let’s get on with this month’s book selections!
Here are the picks for November:
Midnight Is the Darkest Hour by Ashley Winstead
Genre: Thriller
Pages: 355
Publication: October 3rd
“From the critically acclaimed author of In My Dreams I Hold A Knife and The Last Housewife comes a gothic Southern thriller about a killer haunting a small Louisiana town, where two outcasts—the preacher’s daughter and the boy from the wrong side of the tracks—hold the key to uncovering the truth.”
My thoughts: I read this book in October and I loved it! I love this author and will read anything and everything she writes.
My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Love Interest by Clare Gilmore
Genre: Romance
Pages: 335
Publication: October 10th
“A sparkling adversaries-to-lovers romcom set at a magazine publisher in Manhattan. When Casey and Alex are forced into proximity, they soon realize falling for each other is just as much of a risk and as it is a reward.”
My thoughts: I’m not an avid reader of contemporary romance but this one has good early ratings and some cute tropes that I think most readers love.
The Reformatory by Tananarive Due
Genre: Horror/Historical/Literary
Pages: 565
Publication:
“A gripping, page-turning novel set in Jim Crow Florida that follows Robert Stephens Jr. as he’s sent to a segregated reform school that is a chamber of terrors where he sees the horrors of racism and injustice, for the living, and the dead.”
My thoughts: I was so grateful to receive an advanced copy of this book! I have yet to finish it, but I am loving it so far. I’ve heard nothing but good reviews. If you are looking for something dark and haunting with important themes and commentary, this is definitely a good choice!
The Good Part by Sophie Cousens
Genre: Contemporary Fiction
Pages: 338
Publication: November 7th
“By the New York Times bestselling author of Just Haven’t Met You Yet, a downtrodden twenty-six-year-old wakes up to the life she’s always wanted, but is it really a dream come true?”
My thoughts: Although not my genre of choice, this book has very good early ratings on Goodreads and I’ve heard many people in the book community talking about how much they are looking forward to this one.
The Favorites by Rosemary Hennigan
Genre: Mystery/Thriller/Contemporary
Pages: 298
Publication: November 14th
“An edgy, feminist campus novel about justice, gender, and power, following a woman who enrolls in law school and competes her way into an elite “Law and Literature” cohort to get revenge on the charismatic professor who wronged her sister”
My thoughts: If I were getting a box this month, I would definitely include this one! I love dark academia and this one sounds like it’s gonna be good.
My honest thoughts on this month’s picks:
This is the best month yet! Honestly, these are probably the best choices I’ve seen so far since this company began.
If I didn’t have two of these picks as advanced copies and read them already, I would definitely be getting three books this month. 📚
One thing I have noticed about Aardvark (versus other subscription boxes) is that they do seem to frequently pick books that came out the previous month instead of early releases.
Hopefully as this company continues to grow and gain popularity, they’ll get noticed and more highly considered by publishers to get early releases. 🤞
Overall, I think this is going to be a super popular month and would be a great one to sign up for if you’ve been considering it.
