It’s a creepy, unsettling, terrifying, disturbing, nightmare-inducing, psychological/paranormal horror. This one will insert itself into your brain and never let you go.
ARC Review: Ghost Station by S.A. Barnes: Science-Fiction/Horror
I devoured this book! This is Barnes’s best yet – officially an auto-buy author for me now, I will read everything she writes. Easily going to be a favorite read of the year for me.
ARC Review: The Djinn Waits a Hundred Years – Historical/Horror/Fantasy
This was a mess. It was like the book itself didn’t know what it wanted to be or say – a buffet of genres with no central motivation. It just left me confused, wanting, wondering what I just read and why.
Best of 2023: Mystery/Thriller & Horror Books (My 4 & 5 Star Reads)
With Goodreads Choice Awards becoming largely a popularity contest, I decided that this year I wanted to share what I consider to be the best new books that I read in 2023. In no particular order, these are my top mystery, thriller, and horror reads from the past year.
Midnight Showing (Malice Compendium #2) by Megan Shepherd
This was a creepy, exciting ride and I highly recommend this series! It’s the perfect blend of horror, mystery, thriller, and even a bit of fantasy.
Let Him In by William Friend
I have mixed feelings about this one. There were parts where I was totally hooked and invested, but there were also parts of the story that pulled me out of the experience.
The Reformatory by Tananarive Due
I’m so conflicted about this one because I wanted to love it so much and there were parts that I definitely did. My biggest issue with this story is the pacing.
Last to Leave the Room by Caitlin Starling
This was a strange and creepy read! I loved the blend of science fiction and horror. Overall, I thought it was a good read, a solid three-star for me, and I’d read from this author again.
Rouge by Mona Awad
Wow! What a weird, wild, twisted ride this was. This is one of those books that you read and then need time to process afterwards to figure out what the hell you just read.
My Darling Girl by Jennifer McMahon
I absolutely devoured this book! Definitely a five-star experience for me. Highly recommend this book to all mystery, thriller, and horror lovers. It is a must read!
Out There Screaming: An Anthology of New Black Horror by Jordan Peele
It was all a little underwhelming and not as exciting as I wanted. I did like that there was a very wide variety of types and tropes. There’s something for everyone.
Hemlock Island by Kelley Armstrong
This book was wild! I highly recommend it. Can’t wait for everyone to read it just in time with spooky season!
