It was all a little underwhelming and not as exciting as I wanted. I did like that there was a very wide variety of types and tropes. There’s something for everyone.
Hemlock Island by Kelley Armstrong
This book was wild! I highly recommend it. Can’t wait for everyone to read it just in time with spooky season!
The Stranger Upstairs by Lisa Martin
Wow, what an experience! This book was just everything I never expected and knew I wanted from a horror story. I never thought a book could affect me and actually make me as scared as I was while reading this.
Silver Nitrate by Silvia Moreno-Garcia
As slow and strange as a sloth. It was all flat and bland. I’m afraid many, many readers are going to be let down by this one, especially considering how popular this author is and how beloved many of her books are. This one though, it’s a flop for me.
DNF: Mister Magic by Kiersten White
I was really hoping this one would be better than her previous horror novel from last year. Sadly, it wasn’t.
Absolutely terrifying and gripping! Dead of Winter by Darcy Coates
OMG this was so freaking good! I read this in practically one sitting because I could not put it down. I’ve never been so terrified of snow in my life.
A Solid YA Horror and Survival Thriller: The Lake House by Sarah Beth Durst
This story is a solid young adult horror and survival thriller. This is a positive three star read for me. While I didn’t absolutely love it, it was still an enjoyable read. It’s fun, even if not the most mind-blowingly memorable.
A Genre-Bending, Brilliantly-Crafted Novel: Lone Women by Victor Lavalle
Reading this book is an experience, one I enjoyed immensely. This story is a brilliantly-crafted narrative. Genre-bending novels can be a feat, and this one pulls it off perfectly. I highly recommend this book! The synopsis doesn’t even do it justice. It deserves all five stars and way more hype.
Sadly, it’s a DNF for me: ARC Review of Where Darkness Blooms by Andrea Hannah
I don’t think it’s bad by any means, but I think this one just isn’t for me. I failed to engage with it on a deeper level. I will probably be in the minority with this one so take my review with a grain of salt.
Historical Horror at It’s Best: All the Blood We Share by Camilla Bruce
I really enjoyed this book, more than I ever thought I would. It was everything creepy, gritty, and gory that you could want and expect from a novel about a family of serial killers.
Dark, Devious, and Full-Throttle, It’s My Favorite Thriller to Date: The Drift by C.J. Tudor
IT 👏 IS 👏 SO 👏 GOOD 👏 This book is full-throttle from the very start to the very end. The Drift is my favorite thriller to date, and easily one of my favorite books of all time. All the stars for this one, I can’t say enough good things. I’m obsessed and I highly recommend it to any readers who want something truly dark and devious.
ARC Review: The Daughter of Doctor Moreau by Silvia Moreno-Garcia: A Review
This story is definitely flat in comparison to some of her other work, which I know can happen to the best of us when we are trying to top previous successes. I still look forward to seeing what else she has in the future; but for me, this one is just ok.
