Publisher’s Synopsis:
“Seventeen-year-old Kiva Meridan has spent the last ten years fighting for survival in the notorious death prison, Zalindov, working as the prison healer.
When the Rebel Queen is captured, Kiva is charged with keeping the terminally ill woman alive long enough for her to undergo the Trial by Ordeal: a series of elemental challenges against the torments of air, fire, water, and earth, assigned to only the most dangerous of criminals.
Then a coded message from Kiva’s family arrives, containing a single order: “Don’t let her die. We are coming.” Aware that the Trials will kill the sickly queen, Kiva risks her own life to volunteer in her place. If she succeeds, both she and the queen will be granted their freedom.
But no one has ever survived.
With an incurable plague sweeping Zalindov, a mysterious new inmate fighting for Kiva’s heart, and a prison rebellion brewing, Kiva can’t escape the terrible feeling that her trials have only just begun.
From bestselling author Lynette Noni comes a dark, thrilling YA fantasy perfect for fans of Sarah J. Maas, and Sabaa Tahir.”
My Review:
Hours after finishing this book and I’m still reeling from the emotional intensity of it all. I can’t believe it has taken me so long to finally dive into this series. (Well I mean, to be fair, my tbr list is so extensive I really can believe it. But still…) I wish I had started this masterpiece sooner. Everything about this book is absolutely expertly crafted, from the characters to the plot to the world-building. I have not one negative thing to say. This is a story that will stick with me forever and will always hold a special place on my shelves. I am so hoping that the continuation of the story doesn’t fizzle out as so many series tend to do because I loved this book so much and I really want the next one to be just as epic. I’m officially obsessed with this story, everything and everyone in it, and you can bet that I will be pre-ordering any book this author announces in the future. I’m honestly at a loss for words, like choose any of the typical glowing review phrases and insert them here because they all apply. Without a doubt I would give this book more than five stars if I could. I understand and agree with all the hype this book received – y’all can count me in as an avid fan. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I must immediately begin reading the second one right this minute.
