Synopsis:
At only seven-years-old, Jude’s parents were murdered, and she was taken to live among the Faerie. Now seventeen, Jude still feels as though she’s an outsider in this world, a mortal among immortals, even though she wants nothing more than to belong in the High Court. Prince Carden, the youngest son of the fay High King, despises Jude, and the feeling is mutual. But as Jude becomes entwined within the declining fate of the fay world, unlikely alliances are made, deceptions are revealed, and Jude discovers just how capable she is at fitting in with the cruelty surrounding her. Jude’s course is fraught with danger, but she must find a way to persevere to save her sisters and the Faerie.
Review:
I found the world-building of the Fay to be enjoyable and had a lot of potential to be a captivating atmosphere. I didn’t feel particularly drawn to any character, although I appreciate that they are all likeably flawed. I wasn’t entirely convinced with some of the relationships throughout the story. They lacked a certain depth that would have made the story more believable. The first half of the book felt a little slow but it had an interesting climax that kept me reading and a satisfyingly unexpected twist of an ending. There are more emotionally captivating stories out there but it was still a fairly enjoyable read. I think with a bit more working it could have been better. Overall, it was good, but I felt it a bit lacking to be great. I didn’t quite understand the hype surrounding this book, as it was anything monumental or particularly memorable. Again, it wasn’t bad but it wasn’t amazing either. It’s not a book that left any lasting impression on my heart. I am still interested enough in the plot to pick up the next in the series.
