Synopsis:
Kaz Brekker, criminal prodigy of Ketterdam, is offered a job that will pay more money than he could ever dream of. Although this heist is an impossible one, Kaz and his crew know that failing might mean more than just death for themselves, but death and destruction for the entire world. The Grisha are people born with magical abilities, who many believe are a dangerous blight upon the world, and they have more at stake than any to successfully pull of this job.
Review:
I really enjoyed this book, especially the characters – the rag-tag band of dangerous misfits and underdogs that come together for a single purpose bigger than themselves. The multiple points of view really gave insight and depth into each of the characters, their pasts, motivations, and relationships.
“Matthias knew monsters, and one glance at kaz Brekker had told him this was a creature who had spent too long in the dark – he’d brought something back with him when he’d crawled into the light.”
I loved every single one of the characters and I felt that they were all well-developed. This book was action-packed from the first few pages and I couldn’t put it down. Bardugo’s plotting and pacing kept me engaged and invested throughout. There are exciting twists and surprising turns and an explosive finale.
“Better terrible truths than kind lies.”
I can’t wait to pick up the next in the series. The world she builds is detailed and descriptive and really drew me into the story. Her writing style is cheeky and captivating.
“We’re all someone’s monster.”
If you love found family, action and adventure, urban fantasy, political intrigue, with splashes of magical realism, you will love this book.
