Synopsis:
The Empire rules with fear and brutal violence. Laia and her family do their best to survive in the oppressed and impoverished lands of the Scholars. When Laia’s brother, Darin, is arrested on grounds of treason, she decides to seek out the Resistance in hopes that they will help her rescue him. But her end of the bargain, spying as a slave within the Empire’s notorious military academy, will lead her down a treacherous path.
“You are full, Laia. Full of life and dark and strength and spirit. You are in our dreams. You will burn, for you are an ember in the ashes. That is your destiny.”
At the academy, Laia meets Elias, a Martial soldier at the academy, who’s secret desire to be free from the Empire provides Laia with an unexpected ally. As their fates intertwine, the future of both the the Empire and the Scholars rests precariously on their choices.
Review:
I am in love with this book! First of all, Tahir’s skill in writing is top-notch. I really enjoyed the first-person present POV (it’s probably my favorite) because I feel as though I’m journeying along with the characters. The multiple points of view was equally exciting, as we intimately see the two protagonists’ paths unfolding.
“I don’t need to believe in the supernatural. Not when there’s worse that roams the night.”
Her descriptive language is eloquent and evokes all the senses and deep emotions. She has mastered the balance of writing – dialogue, action, and respite all holding proportionate values – which makes the pacing of the story gripping and engaging.
The way we get to know the characters (whom I’m thoroughly obsessed with) is artfully done, showing us details and features through their actions and interactions. We get a vivid picture of who they are, their personalities, and their motivations, all tactfully displayed in a way that feels natural and genuine. Similarly, the way she delicately drips information about the story world is captivating.
“Life is made of so many moments that mean nothing. Then one day, a single moment comes along to define every second that comes after.”
The romances and relationships in this story kept me continually guessing and I couldn’t be happier about that. It was so refreshing to read a truly unpredictable book. This is possibly my favorite aspect of the plot.
This story of mystery, prophecy, and overcoming oppression is utterly enthralling. I absolutely can’t wait to read the next book in this series!
