Synopsis:
Myra is an artist, struggling to hide her magic from the world. She is a Prodigy, with the ability to paint alterations to reality. Prodigies are mercilessly hunted down for their forbidden magic, as it is seen as an affront to the powers of the world’s creator.
Myra and her sister, Lucy, have been orphaned after their parents’ mysterious disappearances. They now live in poverty, with Lucy’s illness only getting worse. The wife of Governor Harris, the most influential and outspoken against Prodigies, comes to Myra with a proposition: paint Will, their son who died in a tragic accident, back to life in the allotted four days and be rewarded greatly with money and with keeping Myra’s secret.
At the Harris manor, she meets their other son, August, who is determined to help her cause. But they soon discover that the Harris family has many secrets, and that Will’s death may not have been accidental. It is a race against time to figure out what really happened.
Review:
I’m hooked into this harrowing murder mystery. I love that just when I think it’s too predictable and I have something figured out, the story takes another dramatic twist instead. And, of course, I’m rooting for this forbidden relationship to succeed! At times the prose is a little cheesy and melodramatic, and the monologues are a little overdone in the beginning, but it quickly gets into a flow of action-packed events that tangle you up in the affair. Several chapters in and I didn’t want to stop reading. It’s such a cute story of unlikely friends becoming more. As a light warning, it is quite vivid sometimes with gory details. Although this doesn’t bother me, it might be off-putting to some readers. The big reveal! Wow, it’s good!
